Hello All.

I'm primarily updating this journal to ask you all a question.

I recently read an article [link] that claimed Australia is dropping in international visitors' "To Visit" lists. Suggestions were that it's too expensive, too dangerous, too boring, too politically correct and the locals too rude.

So a question for my international followers.

Is Australia on your "To Visit" list? I realise it's expensive to get here (flights, visas etc), but if that weren't the issue, would Australia be on that list?

Why? Why not? Were you ever of the impression that Australians are rude? That there is too much crime in our cities? That our countryside & cities are boring?

Add any other impressions you had of Australia or things you might have heard from friends who have been here.

Australia's been on my list of places to visit for decades! ^^;

I haven't heard anything about the locals being rude or anything. In fact, we met a couple from Australia on the train from Edinburgh to Inverness a couple of weeks ago and they were really nice. I don't usually talk to people I don't know, or at least no more than a few polite sentences, but they were easy to talk to, laid back... so it actually put me at ease. Of course, that's the only contact we've ever had with Australians in person, but still... I can't imagine the rest of the population being all bad. There are rude people everywhere. Hell, I know plenty of my own nationals who are, lol.

As far as expensive goes, everywhere is expensive these days. Perhaps it depends on the exchange rate between currencies too... A decade ago, the UK would have seem too expensive for us, too, what with the Pound being so much stronger than the Euro, but now that they're close to being even, it's not as bad. I'm not sure how your currency is but if it's higher than the ones of the tourists who have been saying they won't go there, it might be partly why, lol. During our stay in Scotland, my in-laws kept bringing everything back to the Dollar and saying how expensive things were. And we kept bringing everything back to the Euro and saying how average everything was, price-wise. :D

And I frankly don't see how Australia could be any more dangerous than other parts of the world people travel to, really. Of course, we don't get Australian news over here, so I don't know how safety is there. But,eEven if I heard that some place or other was dangerous, then I'd pick a different place to go to, not cross the whole country off my list. :p

Boring? Nah. I love travelling and seeing other ways of life and new sights. I wager it would take many, many trips there for me to begin to find it even remotely boring. It's so big, and there are so many different things to see. How could I possibly get bored?

In other words, get me a visa, free plane tickets, free accommodation and a year or two off from work, and I'm there tomorrow. ;)

I've been to Australia and thoroughly enjoyed it!!!! We stayed in Kings Cross for a bit and then travelled around. We didn't find it dangerous or the locals too rude. I think every place has it's little horror stories...but our experience was awesome!
